friends .

Recently, I've been rather confused about the definition of friendship, or rather, the makings of a friend. I'm saying, a true friend .
I have so many doubts and definitions that I would like to share.
Please help enlighten me (:

Are friends people who share your joy and sorrow?
or people who are always there only when you are down?
Are friends people who can sense that you're troubled,
or are they people whom you have to confide in in order for them to actually notice that you're troubled?

Do friends see through your pretenious smile and do things to make it real
or do they play along to help hide your sorrow with you?
Are friends people who allow you to vent your frustrations on without even a single word of complain or do they shout back and say you're being ridiculous?

Do friends really understand what you are going through,
or do they just sympathise with you?
Are friends people who give you advice when you confide in them,
or do they just keep quiet and give you a sympathetic look?

Are friends people who would scold you from head-down when you are doing the wrong thing or do they support you in whatever you do?
Would you accept a scolding from a friend,
or would you argue back to say you're right?

Would you say something so harsh to make your friend cry,
or would you cry when your friend says something harsh about you?
Would your friend do something to you even when they know you don't like it
or would he/she respect you to not do things you loathe?

Are friends people who would try their very best to outshine you,
or are they genuinely happy for you when you are outstanding?
Are friends people who make use of you in order to achieve something,
or people whom you make use if in order to achieve something?

Do your friends accept you for who you really are even when you really suck,
or are they people who are constantly trying to make you change for the better?
Are friends people who tell you that the pink shirt you're wearing sucks totally,
or are they people who tell your friends your fashion sense sucks?

Are friends people you gossip with?
Gossip about? Refuse to gossip about?
People who refuse to gossip about you?
People who protect you when others gossiped about you?
People whom you protect when others gossiped about him/her?
Or people your other friends gossip about?

What does it take to be someone's friend?
How long does it take to be someone's friend?
How would we know if someone is your friend?
How would we know if you've found the person you can rely on no matter what happens, good or bad, life or death?
The one whom you would think of going to when you are feeling really terrible?
The one who turns up at the right time when you are feeling really terrible?
The one who gives you freedom?
The one who gives you chances to shine?
The one who will genuinely be happy for you when you shine?
The one who will never try to outshine you?
The one who wants only the best for you?
The one who will never feel insecure with?
The one who protects you when people say things about you?
The one who would NEVER gossip about you?
The one who stands up for you whenever you are bullied/insulted?
The one who stands by you even when the most popular guy/girl/teacher hates you?
The one who will never ignore insults/darts directed at you?
The one who makes sure you will not skip your meals?
The one who pops up at your place when you are sick in bed?
The one who tells you everything that happened in school when you are too sick to join in the fun, making sure you are not left out?
The one who calls you up every now and then just to make sure you are fine?
The one who just wants you to be happy before finding out what happened?
The one who is freaking eager to find out what happened so that he/she can offer you advice to solve your problem?
The one who misses you when he/she is enjoying him/herself?
The one who loves you for who you really are?

[woah . rest assured i'm not talking about a soulmate .. lols .
i'm talking about a true and reliable friend you can count on ..]

If so, I guess it takes a lot to be a friend . Wait, i'm talking about a true friend.
Anyone who likes you can be your friend. But a true friend?
It doesn't come easy .
According to my mummy, my aunts and my cousins [specifically the girls in my family], the one you think is your true friend often end up hurting you because he/she is the one you cared most for and who cared for you most. A friend may even betray you after seven years of friendship simply because of a guy/girl,
a status, a position, a sum of money. Thus, if i were to go according to these strict terms I've listed today, .. I can't really affirm who my friends are.
I choose to believe it isn't this tough to be a true friend,
because if so, I don't think I am capable of being a true friend.

So, what's YOUR definition of friendship? what's YOUR makings of a friend?
A true friend . Make my vision clearer . Enlighten me . Clear my doubts .
Make me believe the world isn't so bad that there can never be many true friends around ..

[PS:if your definition is too long, you can reply me in your post. haha ;D my bestie jieting has already told me her point of view, it's your turn!]

it hurts to know .. that my special friend isn't as special anymore ..
